ABSTRACT

Bullying at work and its impact on employees' intention to leave are the focus of this study. Specifically, this research aims to determine the link between workplace bullying and emotional exhaustion and the intention to leave. Data were gathered from 234 employees working in the Saif group of Pakistan through questionnaires. The study sample was drawn using the convenience sampling technique. The non-probability sampling technique was used because of the Covid 19 situation;as per government notification, only 50% of the staff was present in the offices. This study used SPSS V. 25 for direct relationships, Hayes model 4 for mediation analysis, and for model fitness, we used CFA (Amos 22). The results show that workplace bullying has a statistically significant and positive impact on the intention to quit and emotional exhaustion plays a significant role in mediating this connection (β=0.38***, SE=0.074, LLCI=0.3077 and ULCI=0.6176). Based on these results, we conclude that workplace bullying is a mayor cause of employees' exhaustion and compels them to depart from an organisation at some point. In light of these results, supervisors or line managers play a vital role in organisational sustainability by retaining skilful employees by making the workplace environment friendly and cooperative in the long run.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the responsible virus for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). It was reported the first time in Wuhan (China) by late December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health risk due to the urgent need for an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) that exceeded its capacity. To cope with this exponential spread the fast adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and advanced technology is crucial. For this reason, many research works in AI are conducted. In the current paper, we intend to report AI applications and solutions based on machine learning, deep learning, and data mining algorithms for detecting, predicting, and diagnosing COVID-19. Furthermore, this study aims to develop a new deep learning-based method capable of predicting whether a COVID-19 patient requires admission to an intensive care unit using clinical tabular data from Kaggle. This model will contribute to the optimization of ICU resources. The experimental results showed that combining Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and TabNet classifier improved the prediction performance and surpassed the state-of-the-art models: MLP, RF, LR, and KNN. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis practitioner paper intends to explore how Public Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) in Pakistan could strategize alumni to encounter the financial sustainability challenges and achieve their organizational potential relevant to academic, research and public services.Design/methodology/approachEmploying a hermeneutic (interpretive) phenomenological approach, this study used interviews and focus group discussion data with 26 alumni from eight different PHEIs in Pakistan to explore their attitudes toward engagement with their institutions.FindingsThis study shows a clear shift in institutional strategies between the developing and developed economies regarding the importance and value given to alumni and engagement practices employed.Practical implicationsThis study recommends that PHEIs in Pakistan can enjoy alumni engagement benefits to strengthen their organizational standing, provided they view alumni as a valuable entity and observe a proactive approach to engage alumni in a manner that may reflect the mutually beneficial and trustworthy relationship. Further, it would help institutions attain long-term financial sustainability, which is threatened by state-funding cuts and, more recently, COVID-19 pandemic-led recession.Originality/valueScholarship shows that institutions in the developed economies have built a strong bond with their alumni to seek their support. However, the voices of institutions from the developing economies have not been heard yet. In this regard, this study appears to highlight the current alumni engagement practices and how institutions could improve on them to strategize alumni for a sustainable future.

ABSTRACT

Nurses caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection are exposed to many psychosocial challenges. Exploring and describing the psychosocial support needed for the nurses caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 is significant to determine what type of support is needed by the nurses. The objective of this study was to describe the psychosocial support needed by the nurses caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection in the North West Province of South Africa. A qualitative, descriptive phenomenological, contextual design was used to collect data. The study used a non-probability sampling approach and purposive sampling technique to select four focus group discussions (FGDs) from the four hospitalsselected for this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysis was done using descriptive phenomenological data analysis to develop themes and categories. Measures to ensure trustworthiness were considered throughout the study. The finding indicated that it is difficult for nurses to care for COVID-19 patients because it is a novel disease. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19 and most patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were demised. Shortages of human and material resources to care for COVID-19 patients were also reported. Nurses caring for COVID-19 patients are at risk of being infected and they are physically and psychologically affected. The study shows that nurses caring for COVID-19 patients are physically, psychologically and socially affected by the disease. Therefore, they need the support of their managers through the appreciation of their work, provision of adequate Personal protective equipment (PPE) and human capital to provide quality patient care. Nurses caring for COVID-19 patients need psychological support when they are depressed. They also need colleagues from other wards to encourage them and not see them as the carriers of the disease. Also, the community needs to understand the risks that nurses caring for COVID-19 patients take and support them.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the IDP process for improved public participation and thereafter assess the barriers to the design and implementation of the IDP. The IDP process was developed to improve strategic planning and ensure that no one is left behind at the grassroots. This was done by promoting public participation in municipal affairs. Many South African municipalities have been struggling to use the IDP process to improve public participation. A mixed-methods approach to investigate the participative IDP process and barriers, using the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) as a case study was adopted. The methodology included 400 respondents who were chosen through a probability sampling technique and probed to complete the online survey using a closed-ended questionnaire guide, and 10 respondents were also chosen through a non-probability sampling technique and were face-to-face interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. The key results revealed that poor public participation exists in the study area due to a lack of encouragement from responsible authorities. Many barriers hinder the effective design and implementation of the participative IDP process, such as protests, working in silos, a lack of institutional resources to address the competing needs of communities, and a lack of transparency, accountability, and consultation. Lastly, the lack of oversight by the municipality in the adoption of e-participation has been discovered as a barrier to the design and implementation of participative IDP process during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study concludes by providing a few recommendations to enhance participative IDP process. The GTM should at all times uphold democratic principles by ensuring active and effective public participation, transparency, and accountability in municipal affairs. South African municipalities, especially GTM, should develop innovative institutional and organizational skills to make better use of their resources, solve socioeconomic barriers, and enhance service delivery.

ABSTRACT

As part of measures to promote good hygiene, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund adopted affordable handwashing with soap facility (Tippy-Tap), and implemented sensitisation training for residents in the Binduri District of Ghana. In the context of good hygiene technology adoption, this study examines how poor communities have adopted and used Tippy-Tap over a period of 1 year. The study further identifies the associated post-sensitisation drivers of the Tippy-Tap. In addition to descriptive analysis, this study relies on post-sensitisation cross-sectional data and a logit regression with its marginal effects for the analysis. The results show that after the sensitisation programme, the adoption and use rate now stand at 90%, up from the baseline of 4%. The study provides evidence that female household-heads are more likely to adopt and use the Tippy-Tap relative to male household-heads. The study further reveals that being educated increases the probability of accessing the Tippy-Tap facility by about 23%. Subsequently, this study finds that personal, household, and community-level characteristics are the key drivers of the high adoption and use rate. In conclusion, the study finds evidence of a high adoption and use rate of the Tippy-Tap initiative after its sensitisation. The study recommends extensive sensitisation of hand hygiene using community-level social norms and practices.

ABSTRACT

The paper probes the Nigerian government's social media campaign to combat the outbreak of COVID-19. Focusing on government's public policy measures to curtail the transmission of the new coronavirus disease through standard infection control measures and social distancing, the research evaluates ordinary Nigerians' perception of social media dramatized coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study assesses the impact of viral comic videos shared on social media platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram etc. on people's critical perception of the pandemic as well as their health behavior. The aim is to establish how the Nigerian government has effectively harnessed the social media entertainment platform in its charge to disseminate credible information to a largely young and semi-literate population which is economically imperiled with limited access to mainstream media. Stressing the deficit of trust between the Nigerian public and the ruling elite, the paper analyses how social media skits interrogate elitism and the counter infection strategy of lockdowns in a struggling economy, The paper emphasizes the crucial roles social media platforms have played in shaping misinformation and prevalent myths about Covid19 in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

College years are very important in an individual's life, however, as the complexity of the course increases, it brings in various challenges. Thus, this study aims to investigate the relationship between psychological well-being (PWB), resilience, grit, and optimism among college students in Mumbai. Employing purposive and snowball sampling techniques, Flourishing Scale (Diener, et al., 2009), Brief Resilience Scale (Smith, et al., 2008), Short Grit Scale (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009), and lastly, the Life Orientation Test-Revised (Scheier, Carver & Bridges, 1994) was administered. Correlational analysis (N = 95) indicated a positive link of PWB with resilience, grit, and optimism. Resilience was also positively correlated with grit and optimism. However, the relationship between grit and optimism was not found to be significant. The study assisted to fill the gap in the literature and can also help college institutions to incorporate practices for mental health hygiene of its students.
